Nirbhaya Case: The four convicts in the Nirbhaya Gang Rape Case of 2012 – Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur Singh, Pawan Gupta, and Mukesh – are to be executed in a week from now, and have earned around Rs. 1,40,000 in prison wages during their prison term in the Tihar Jail, Delhi, in past 7 years, according to sources.

Additionally, the source said, the 4 convicts broke the prison rules a total of 23 times in this time.

The Nirbhaya Case Verdict for the four convicts was guilty in the gang rape, torture, and killing of a 22 year old medical student in Delhi and will be hanged on the 22nd of January 2020 at 7:00 am (0700 Hours), as a Delhi Court issued their death warrant.

In the 23 counts of prison rule breaking, convict Akshay was punished only once, however, convicts Vinay, Mukesh, and Pavan broke the rules 11, 3, and 8 times respectively.

In the entirety of their jail term, Mukesh – who broke prison rules thrice – chose not to undertake any labour work, however, convicts Pawan, Akshay, and Vinay earned Rs. 29,000, Rs. 69,000, and Rs. 39,000 as prison wages respectively, as per sources.

In 2015, convict Vinay took admission in a Bachelor’s degree program however, he did not complete it. Additionally, in 2016, the rest of the three convicts – Akshay, Mukesh, and Pawan – took admission in 10th standard, however failed to pass the exams.

On the 16th of December, 2012, the 4 convicts along with 2 others (1 Juvenile, who was released after serving in correction center, and other convict who committed suicide in jail) gang raped a 22 year old medical student in a moving bus, they mutilated her body with an iron rod and then dumped her naked and bleeding on the roadside.

The girl succumbed to her injuries and dies on the 29th December 2019 in a hospital in Singapore. The name “Nirbhaya” (Fearless) was given to her by the citizens of India and used by the police to hide the girl’s identity.

The family of the convicts are only allowed to meet the convicts 2 times before they will be hanged. Arrangements for their executions by hanging has begun. And the four convicts will be hanged together (First time in India). The Uttar Pradesh Prison Authority earlier confirmed that Jallad (Executioner) Pawan will be sent from Meerut to hang the convicts.

Pawal Jalld will be paid Rs. 15,000 per execution.

The 4 convicts, in Tihar Jail, are kept in different cells and are being monitored by CCTV. On Sunday, the Tihar Jail administration carried out a “Dummy Execution” for the preparations.

The Supreme Court of India has already dismissed pleas against death sentence filed by 3 convicts and a mercy plea filed by the 4th. However, on Tuesday, Mukesh had filed for a mercy petition in front of the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind.
