Nirbhaya Case: Death Warrant Issued By Delhi Court For All Convicts

A Delhi Court, today, issued death warrant for all of the 4 convicts that were on the death row in the 2012 Gang Rape Case. The court have finalised the date as to when the convicts in Nirbhaya case will be hanged.

The court said that on the 22nd of January at 7:00 am (700 hours), all of the convicts will be hanged.

Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir expressed his contentment as he wrote “Finally! India’s daughter gets JUSTICE! #Nirbhaya” on Twitter.

Another user on Twitter said “I thank every child of this country and the media who stood strongly with me. Jan 22 is going to be a big day for me.  I had faith in the system and justice has been finally served: Asha Devi, mother of #Nirbhaya”.

During the hearing on Monday, the prosecution claimed that there are no applications pending before any court in India or even in front of the President of India as of now from any of the convicts, adding, and all the review petitions from all the convicts have already been dismissed by the Supreme Court of India.

The prosecution urged the court to issue the death warrants by saying “in between issuance and execution of death warrants of the convicts want to file curative petitions they can do so”.

However, the counsel of two of the convicts – Mukesh and Vinay – said that they are in process of filing curative petition in the top court.

In December, a Delhi Court had asked the authorities of the Tihar Jail to seek response from the 4 convicts on the death row in the 2012 Nirbhaya Gang Rape Case on whether they will be filing mercy pleas in front of the President against their executions or not.

In the meantime, the apec court dismissed the plea submitted by one of the convict – Akshay Kumar Singh – saying that the review petition is not “re-hearing of appeal over and over again” as it has already considered the circumstances and upheld the death penalty.

In December 2019, Nirbhaya’s parents requested the court for a fast-track procedure and hang all 4 convicts in the case.

On 12th December, 2018, the Supreme Court dismissed a Public interest litigation (PIL) giving direction to execute the death penalty that have been awarded to – Akshay, Mukesh, Vinay, and Pawan – the 4 convicts.

On the 16th of December 2012, a 23 year old physiotherapy intern was raped and her body was mutilated in a moving bus in South Delhi by 6 people, and later dumping her nude on the road side.

The woman boarded the bus in Munirka in South Delhi along with a male friend when she was going back to her house.After receiving the initial treatment in Delhi, she was shifted to Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore, where she succumbed to her wounds on the 29th of December, 2012.
