Grammys 2022: Doja Cat, Billie Eilish, BTS Rock The Red Carpet On A Star-Studded Musical Night

  • Indian composer Ricky Rej won the Best New Age Album for Divine Tides. This was his second Grammy.

The 64th edition of the Grammy Awards honouring artists with “Outstanding Achievement in the music industry” started on Sunday night in Las Vegas. The trophy depicting a gilded gramophone is regarded as one of the four major annual American entertainment awards alongside the Academy Awards (for film accomplishments), the Emmy Awards (for television accomplishments) and the Tony Awards (for theatre accomplishments).

The “Bad Guy” singer Billie Eilish graced the occasion in a funky black outfit accessorizing it with a spiky updo and perfectly complimenting sunglasses. She arrived fresh off an Academy Award win for her crooning album ‘No Time To Die”. American rapper, Megan Thee Stallion also arrived on the red carpet after her flamboyant performance on the hit number “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from the movie “Encanto”, at the Oscars last week.

Doja Cat donned an Atelier Versace ensemble with a flair sheer skirt accentuating her look. Her albums “Kiss Me More” featuring SZA and “Planet Her” were nominated for Record of the Year and Album of the Year respectively. “Kiss Me More” received the award for the Best Pop/duo group performance. Olivia Rodrigo who clinched the award for the Best pop vocal album for her number, “Sour” slipped into an off-shoulder gown with glittering pink detail for the musical award night.

Indian composer, Ricky Rej popular for his albums “Wild Karnataka”, “Cauvery”, “Himalayas”, and the like won his second Grammy award.  He along with Steward, drummer for The Police, won the award in the Best New Age Album category for “Divine Tides”. He earlier won a Grammy for “Winds of Samsara”. US-born Ricky now lives and works in Bengaluru. Upon receiving the award along with rock icon, Steward Copeland, Ricky greeted folded his hands in Namaste to greet the audience. He took to Instagram to extend gratitude for the award and expressed admiration for the living-legend Steward Copeland.

Ricky had earlier shared a post upon being nominated for Grammy thanking all his fellow artists and collaborators across the world for being a part of the journey with #DivineTides. Ricky Kej is a recipient of 100 awards in over 20 countries and received his first-ever Grammy in 2015 for “Winds of Samsara”. He has also been honoured with the United Nations Global Humanitarian artist and is also an environmentalist.

Falguni Shah, the only Indian-origin woman to be nominated twice in the Best Children’s Music Album category at the Grammys won the prestigious trophy for her song “A Colourful World”. Humbled upon receiving this honour, Falguni shared pictures on her social media from the magical night thanking the Recording Academy for this prodigious recognition.

Falguni performed at the opening ceremony of the Grammys 2022 alongside music maestro, AR Rahman. Falguni had earlier received a Grammy nomination in 2018 for her album “Falu’s Bazaar”.

K-Pop sensation BTS aced their red carpet look with earthy and neutral tones pairing V and RM, SUGA and J-Hope, Jungkook and Jimin. Jin, on the contrary, pulled off a dapper beige. The group nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Butter,  performed at the Grammys night.

Multi-genre artist, Jon Batiste entered the ceremony with 11 Grammy nominations including the best music video for “Freedom,” a vibrantly coloured tribute to New Orleans. He won best American roots song (for “Cry”), best music video, best American roots performance (for “Cry”) and tied with Carlos Rafael Rivera (The Queen’s gambit”) for best score soundtrack for visual media (for “Soul”). His song “We Are” released on Verve Records on March 19th 2021, won Album of the year.
