At a time when the novel Coronavirus has been declared a pandemic and have claimed the lives of more than 8,000 people around the globe, many organisations and health experts have come together to fight the spread of both the virus itself and misinformation pertaining it.
However, in recent weeks, more than a hundred Iranians have lost their lives due to alcohol poisoning in the belief that industrial grade methanol, ethanol can ward off the novel Coronavirus. This belief has been ravaging the country as per the local media reports.
In Fars alone, 61 people have died of alcohol poisoning, that is 5 times the deaths caused by the novel COVID-19 in the area as reported by semi-official Iranian Students News Agency.
Across Iran, over 1,000 people have been hospitalized reports the semi-official reformist Etemad.
Iran’s health sector is already struggling to cope with the novel Coronavirus, the country has reported over 17,000 cases COVID-19 among which more than 1,100 people have lost their lives making Iran the 3rd worst-hit country in the world after China and Italy.
What has made the case worse for Iran is the struggling economy and the US sanctions which have led to the shortage of hospital beds, medicine, and supplies.
