Highlights:

  • According to Azad, Congress is unlikely to win 300 or more seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
  • The former J&K Chief Minister said, Congress needs the backing of 300 MPs to reverse the judgement on Article 370.

Senior Congress leader and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and Ghulam Nabi Azad stated on Wednesday that he does not see the party getting 300 seats in the upcoming general election to overturn the Article 370 decision.

Azad told a rally in Poonch, J&K, that he hopes the grand old party secures 300+ seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, but he doesn’t see that happening.

Azad’s comment was in reference to the reinstatement of Article 370 in J&K.

“Only Supreme Court can decide on Article 370 or the ruling government can do it. But how will they do it if they abrogated it? Congress requires the backing of 300 or more MPs to overturn this decision, and given the current circumstances, I doubt we will be able to win 300 or more Lok Sabha seats in the 2024 elections. I wish, God willing, we could achieve this target, but the chances are bleak,” he stated.

Azad further asked the Union government to introduce legislation in Parliament to re-establish Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.

This statement by the senior member of Congress comes after he remarked in a recent interview it is now important to go beyond Articles 370 and 35A.

Responding to National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah’s recent statement in which he questioned the Congress party’s silence on Article 370, Azad stated that, while the case is before the Supreme Court, he strongly opposed the Centre’s decision in Parliament several times as the leader of the opposition.

On Wednesday, Abdullah stated that while the repeal of Article 370 is on the BJP’s agenda, there is no logic in the removal of statehood and division of the former state of J&K.

He also criticized Mehbooba Mufti for abrogating Article 370, stating that the PDP made a tremendous mistake by allying with the BJP.
