Highlights:
- 75% eligibility criteria for JEE (Main) 2021 waived off
- However, the 75% eligibility criteria will still be mandatory for those who qualify for IITs/ NITs/ IIITs and other CFTIs
On Tuesday, The Union Education Ministry announced that the eligibility criteria of obtaining a minimum of 75% marks in class 12 for appearing in the JEE (Main) exams, has been waived off for the coming academic year 2021-2022.
Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ said, “Considering the decision taken for IIT JEE (Advanced) and in line with the decision taken for the last academic year, the Ministry of Education had decided to waive off the 75% marks (in class 12 exam) eligibility criteria under Joint Entrance Examination (Main) for the next academic year 2021-2022 in respect of NITs, IIITs, SPAs and other CFTIs, whose admissions are based on JEE (Main).”
Considering the decision taken for IIT JEE(Advanced) and in line with the decision taken for the last academic year, it has been decided to waive off the 75% marks (in class 12 exam) eligibility criteria under Joint Entrance Examination (Main) for the next academic year 2021-2022

The admissions to several Under Graduate (UG) programmes of the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur (West Bengal) and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs – excluding the IITs) are made on the basis of ranks/ merit which the candidates secure in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) (Main) which is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), said the ministry, in a statement.

For those candidates who qualify for admission in the IITs/ NITs/ IIITs and such other CFTIs whose admissions are based on ranks of the JEE, they are required to have secured a minimum of 75% marks in the 12th Class exams or be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th Class exam conducted by their respective Boards.
For Scheduled Caste /Scheduled Tribe students, the qualifying mark in 12th Class exam is 65%.
In the meantime, the government has also mentioned that the syllabus of JEE (Mains) as well as the NEET (UG) will stay unchanged for the year 2021.
However, unlike the previous years, this year the candidates will have options to answer the questions in JEE and NEET Examinations.
Though the syllabus for JEE (Main 2021) to remain same as the previous year, this year the students will be given choice to answer 75 questions (25 questions each in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics) out of 90 questions (30 questions each in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics).
In JEE (Main) 2020, there were 75 questions all of which had to be answered by the candidates (25 questions each in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics).
