Former Women Hockey Captain Who Helped India Get 3 Gold Medals Files A Case Of Domestic Violence

Suraj Lata Devi Files Case Against Her Husband

Former Indian women Hockey captain, Waikhom Suraj Lata Devi filed a complaint with the police against her husband on accounts of mental torture, domestic violence, and physical assault.

On Wednesday at a press conference, Devi said that her husband has been harassing her ever since they got married back in 2005 with dowry remaining the chief reason. The press conference was held in Imphal.

It was under her captaincy, that India won 3 gold medals at the Commonwealth Games held in 2002 in India. It is said that she was the person who inspired the famous Shah Rukh Khan starer Bollywood movie “Chak De! India”.

Devi said, “My husband, Shanta Singh, ridiculed me when I brought all the medals and photos that I had won on the day of my marriage and had remarked what use would it serve?”

Her husband also accused her of winning the Arjuna Award due to her “immoral behaviour”, she said.

The former Indian women Hockey captain says the only reason why she put up the harassment until now was the hope that her husband’s behaviour will change, she said, “I never wanted the matter to become public. However, there is always a limit to someone’s patience and tolerance”.

She finally decided that it was enough when her husband assaulted her at Kapurthala, Punjab in November last year where she was officiating at a tournament organised by Rail Coach Factory in Sultanpur Lodhi.

The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Sultanpur Lodhi, Sarwan Singh said that the police has registered an FIR after a formal complaint was lodged by Suraj Lata Devi with Manipur Police in January this year which was later forwarded to Sultanpur Lodhi police station as the violence took place there.

After Devi, who is a mother of two, filed a complaint, her husband was booked under several sections of IPC (Indian Penal Code), including IPC 498-A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty).
