China’s alarming predicament has been in the headlines for quite some time. The country is in terrible shape with an unprecedented surge in Covid-19 cases driven by the BF.7 Omicron variant, with medicine shortages, chaos at hospitals and jammed crematoriums. Experts have warned of “millions of deaths” and the potential for new variations to spread outside the nation.
Amidst crumbling medical services in the country, when apprehension and anguish are at their peak, a Chinese pop singer Jane Zhang intentionally infected herself with the virus and gave a bizarre reason to justify it. In a shocking revelation, the star said that she visited the homes of ‘sheep’ (a term used for virus carriers in mainland China) intending to contract the virus. She has received tremendous backlash on social media since she posted about the absurd incident on the Chinese microblogging site Weibo.
She was prepping for her New Year’s Eve concert and could not afford to get sick while at it. Thus, to ward off the risk of infection during the show, the 38-year-old singer purposefully tried to contract the virus ahead of the event.
“I Had Covid For A Day”
The singer said she was down with fever after meeting her friends and had sore throat and body aches, which were all covid-associated symptoms. Zhang mentioned that despite her symptoms being similar to someone who would have the Covid-19 infection, they lasted only for a day.

“All my symptoms vanished after a day and a night of sleep; all I did was drink much water and take vitamin C and recovered,” Zhang said.
Many have condemned her for being callous and careless since her message went viral, especially when China is dealing with a Covid-19 rise. After receiving criticism for her conduct, the artist removed the contentious post from social media and apologised to the general public.

The SCMP report said she also discussed her fitness routines while ill and continued by inquiring whether such a brief period might be a positive case. She posted on Weibo last Friday, “I am unsure if it’s appropriate to ask, but does my case with symptoms lasting for only one day count as a positive case?”
After several criticisms, the singer apologised for her behaviour. Attempting to defend her baffling decision, she stated that her co-workers would be at risk if she contracted the illness while the concert was going on. It soon dawned upon her that her decision was in poor taste, and she urged people to still focus on preventing the Covid virus.
