A 26-year-old woman’s adventure journey ended 50-foot down a Hawaiian waterfall but the fortunate one lives on to tell the tale. Heather Friesen who is an American beach volleyball player was hiking with her friends at the Ka’au Crater Trail in Honolulu in 2016 when the incident happened. While several people have died at that location, Heather says God saved her life that day. She was in the state ahead of her senior beach volleyball season at the University of Hawaii. As Heather Friesen had a GoPro camera attached to her body, the whole accident was captured on it. The GoPro video shows Heather looking at the waterfall in surprise only to tumble down the edge in seconds. Talking to In the World of Female Sports, she said, “It’s not a place you’re supposed to jump off of because the water was mid-thigh height, about three feet deep. So you’re not supposed to jump into that because you will die if you land the wrong way. I can still picture it in my head. There was this little ridge off to the left and I tried to grab on. In my head, I was like ‘it’s going to be fine’. In between she can be seen trying to hold on to a ridge however, it was too slippery. She said that while falling it was her boyfriend who is now her husband and rest of the family that came to her mind. While she wanted to protect herself, she couldn’t. The volleyball player landed three feet deep water and hit a rock. Her lungs had collapsed making it difficult for her to breathe.
But, despite the terrible fall, she believed that she was going to be fine. Friesen said, “I kept repeating to myself “God’s got me I’m going to be okay” and that “I’m going to play volleyball again.”‘ While friends immediately came to her rescue, she couldn’t walk and had to be airlifted to a local hospital. Heather’s church friends who were also coincidentally hiking in the same are on that day come over and prayed for her as she waited for the helicopter to arrive. She said, “I found out there had been others before me who fell from the same spot and died, and I know that God saved my life that day.” Friesen broke 10 ribs, fractured her scapula, suffered deep wounds other than a collapsed lung. However, three years after the accident, she continues to play volleyball.
