On Friday Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed anguish as at least 16 migrant workers lost their lives in a train accident which took place in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. Prime Minister Modi also spoke to Piyush Goyal, Railway Minister regarding the train accident and assured that assistance will be provided to all those who were affected.

Prime Minister Wrote, “ Extremely anguished by the loss of lives due to the rail accident in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. Have spoken to Railway Minister Shri Piyush Goyal and he is closely monitoring the situation. All possible assistance required is being provided.” On Twitter.

It was reported by the Chief Public Relations Officer (CRPO) of South Central Railway (SCR) that at least 16 migrant workers lost their lives while leaving 5 others injured when a freight train ran over them between Jalna and Aurangabad, on Friday morning.

The injured were shifted to a Civil hospital in Aurangabad.

The accident happened in the early hours of Friday morning in the Nanded Division of South Central Railway which comes under Karman Police Station in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra.

The migrant workers are said to belong to Madhya Pradesh and were walking home from Jalna, Maharashtra. After walking for around 36 kilometres they stopped to take some rest when they allegedly fell asleep.

At around 5:15 AM today, they were run over by a freight train at the district which is 360 kilometres from Mumbai.

The Railway Ministry Tweeted claiming the driver tried to stop the train. “During early hours today after seeing some labourers on track, loco pilot of goods train tried to stop the train but eventually hit them between Badnapur and Karmad stations in Parbhani-Manmad section. Injureds have been taken to Aurangabad Civil Hospital. Inquiry has been ordered”.

The Ministry of Railways also ensured that an inquiry will take place saying, “Shri Ram Kripal, Commissioner of Railway Safety, South Central circle will hold an independent inquiry in todays labourers runover incident in Parbhani-Manmad section of Nanded Railway division of South Central Railway.”
