On Tuesday night, the Cannes Film festival revealed its competition jury with ‘Titane’ and ‘Fire’ star Vincent London as Jury President to mark the 75th anniversary of the festival. Lindon is the first French actor to preside over the jury in over a decade since Isabelle Huppert did so in 2009. He won Best Actor at Cannes in 2015. In the history of this Internation Film Festival French celebrities, such as Yves Montand in 1987 for the 40th Festival, Gérard Depardieu in 1993 for the 45th Festival, and Isabelle Adjani in 1997 for the 50th, have frequently held this role in an anniversary year.
The jury is constituted of five men and four women who will choose the winners of this year’s Palme d’Or honours. Deepika Padukone who made her debut at the festival in 2017will be at the event next month not as a L’Oreal ambassador but as a member of the jury. Joining Vincent and Deepika on the jury are Oscar-winning filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, Jasmine Trinca, Jeff Nichols, Ladj Ly and Joachim Trier. Actor-director Rebecca Hall and Noomi Rapace who are familiar faces among movie buffs for their roles in Iron Man 3 and Sherlock Holmes: Book of Shadows respectively will also be a part of the jury at the gala event which begins on May 17th and ends on May 28th.
Deepika took to Instagram and posted a story after the unveiling of the Cannes jury. Her bio on the Festival De Cannes website described her as an “actress, producer, philanthropist and entrepreneur”. Critically acclaimed film, ‘Piku’ alongside ‘Padmaavat’ and her latest release Gehraiyaan’ were listed in the film credits. The bio also mentioned her Hollywood debut as the female lead in xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, co-starring Vin Diesel. Deepika has been a steadfast proponent of mental health and has set up The Live Love Laugh Foundation with an aim to destigmatize mental illness. She was also named one of the “100 Most Influential People in the World” by Time Magazine in 2018.
