Acclaimed filmmaker Pradeep Sarkar, known for his popular movies such as Parineeta, Mardaani, Laga Chunari Mein Daag and Helicopter Eela, has passed away at the age of 68, leaving behind a legacy of heart-warming stories. Director Hansal Mehta took to Twitter today (March 24) to announce the sad news, writing, “Pradeep Sarkar. Dada.RIP”

The renowned director breathed his last on March 24 at 3:30 am at the age of 68. According to sources, Pradeep Sarkar had been undergoing dialysis and his potassium levels had drastically dropped. He was immediately rushed to a hospital where he eventually passed away.

“It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that Pradeep has departed from his heavenly abode. Please join us at 4 pm for his funeral at Santacruz Hindu Crematorium to say goodbye to him,” his family shared.

The director produced numerous box office-winning Bollywood films over his career. His most well-known works include Parineeta (2005), starring Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan, and Rani Mukerji’s Mardaani (2014).

Interestingly, Parineeta marked Pradeep Sarkar’s directorial debut in Bollywood, boasting an impressive ensemble cast including Sanjay Dutt, Dia Mirza, Raima Sen, Sabyasachi Chakrabarty, among others.

After the triumph of his 2005 blockbuster, Pradeep Sarkar went on to direct Laaga Chunari Mein Daag (2007) starring Jaya Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Abhishek Bachchan, and more. The film hit theaters on October 12, 2007, garnering praise from audiences and critics alike.

In 2010, the director’s next venture was Lafangey Parindey, starring Deepika Padukone and Neil Nitin Mukesh. Following this, he went on to direct the critically acclaimed movie, Mardaani, in 2014, featuring Rani Mukerji in the lead role, which became one of the most remarkable films of the year. Four years later, he directed Helicopter Eela, featuring Kajol.

After directing several movies, the filmmaker explored the world of web series with Coldd Lassi Aur Chicken Masala in 2019. He continued his success in the digital world by directing Arranged Marriage and Forbidden Love. He helmed the first two episodes of the television series Duranga, which was his most recent project as a director.
