The second phase of the COVID-19 vaccination dry run, across the Indian borders, will be conducted today as the nation prepares to receive its first shipment of the Covishield vaccine created by AstraZeneca and the Oxford University and has been manufactured by the Serum Institute of India.

About 25 health workers will get dummy vaccinations at each site during the day-long exercise, which is intended to test the processes and expose potential gaps in the system ahead of the actual Covid vaccination campaign.

What is a dry run?

A dry run is the testing session in which a sample number of recipients will go through a simulated immunisation procedure is essentially known as a dry run.

Who’s going to participate in the dry run?

About 1.7 lakh vaccinators and 3 lakh team members were trained for beneficiary verification, vaccination process, management of the cold chain and logistics, adverse event following immunization (AEFI) management and for operating the Co-WIN software, and management of bio-medical waste.

Objective of the dry run:

The main goal of the dry run exercise is to test the connection between planning and execution and recognize the challenges after that. It will also assess the operational viability of using the CoWIN application that will help the government to carry out the roll out seamlessly.

Where will the dry run be carried out?

The dry run on Friday will take place at three-session locations in 736 districts spanning 33 states and Union Territories (UTs) to prepare for an expected rollout.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh are out of this dry run mock exercise as they have already conducted it in all their districts.

Here are the dry run centres that states have announced:

Delhi: The health officials will conduct the second dry run in Delhi for the roll-out of the Covid vaccination, which will cover many districts of the region. South Delhi, South East Delhi, North West Delhi and New Delhi are the districts, they said.

Maharashtra: In 30 districts and 25 municipal corporation areas, the dry run for Covid vaccination will take place. The mock drill exercise is being conducted to identify logistical challenges that may occur in the actual drive for immunization.

Tamil Nadu: The coronavirus vaccination dry run will take place today in all districts, Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan said earlier.

Karnataka: Health Minister Dr. K Sudhakar has said that the dry run of the Covid vaccination will be carried out at 263 locations in the state. He also said 6.30 lakh healthcare staff have registered for vaccination in both the government and private sector and the registration window is still open.

Madhya Pradesh: Indore of Madhya Pradesh will perform the mock drill and it will be carried out in four centers. Dr Amit Malakar who is a Covid Nodal Officer said about the dry run that the mock drill would be performed at four centers in capital city of MP which is Indore and for 25 people in each center.

Jharkhand: The ongoing arrangements for vaccination and cold chain management in the state were checked by CM Hemant Soren. The vaccination has established as many as 99.89 lakh people, including 1.5 lakh healthcare workers comprising Anganwadi workers and 2 lakh frontline workers who will be vaccinated in the first step.

Uttarakhand: A day-long exercise will be held in all 13 districts of the state to prepare for Covid’s vaccination. At 130 health centres across the state, 10 each in each district, the mock drill will be carried out.

Puducherry: Today, the second dry run of coronavirus vaccination will take place in nine centers throughout the state.
