The Oscar-nominated actor Margot Robbie has spoken out about Lady Gaga’s portrayal of Harley Quin in “Joker 2” for the first time. In the impending “Joker” sequel, officially named “Joker: Folie a Deux,” Lady Gaga will play Harley Quinn, and the “Birds of Prey” star is allegedly quite enthusiastic about this.
According to Variety, Joaquin Phoenix, who won an Oscar for playing the part in the first “Joker” sequel, will work alongside Lady Gaga. Despite rumours that the singer is playing Harley Quinn, Warner Bros. and Gaga haven’t officially disclosed anything yet.
Variety also reported that Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Brendan Gleeson will join returning star Zazie Beetz in “Joker: Folie a Deux.” They will all appear in the film opposite Phoenix and Gaga.
The actress, who played Harley Quinn in multiple DC Universe movies, compares Harley Quinn’s character to Macbeth or Batman, in which several people subsequently assume leading roles through time. She stated, “It makes me so happy because I said from the very beginning that all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters, the way Macbeth or Batman always gets passed from great actor to great actor.”
Robbie exclaimed,” It’s kind of like someone gets to do their Batman, or someone gets to do their Macbeth. I feel like, in not so many cases, are they female characters — Queen Elizabeth I, but beyond that, which I got to have a crack out as well, which I was honoured to do. I was like, ‘Wow! Cate Blanchett did Queen Elizabeth I. Now I get to.'”
“It’s such an honour to have built a foundation strong enough that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get to have a go at playing,” Robbie explained. “I think she’ll do something incredible with it.”
Robbie considers it a victory that the eccentric and mysterious Harley Quinn has now joined their ranks, and she thinks it would be wonderful if Gaga were to portray the role in the future.
Warner Bros.’ ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’ is set to premiere on October 4, 2024.
