On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the trust that will be responsible for the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. The announcement comes just 4 days before the deadline set by the Supreme Court of India when it passed the judgment on the disputed Ram Mandir case on the 9th of November, 2019.

In Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Modi said “I am pleased to announce that a big decision has been taken to follow the directives of the Supreme Court. As per the directions of the Supreme Court, the cabinet has prepared a detailed plan for the construction of Ram Temple at Ayodhya. My government has decided to set up a trust called Sri Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha kshetra, which will take decisions independently on the construction of a Ram temple and related issues”.

As he said “Let us all support the construction of a grand Ram Mandir in Ayodhya” the desk was thumped in acknowledgment and MPs chanted “Jai Shree Ram” from their seats.

The name of the trust is Sri Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra, and a total of 67 acres of land has been given to the trust. there will be 15 members in total including a Dalit representative.

Amit Shah tweeted “Shree Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra will have 15 members and have 1 member from the Dalit minority. I congratulate Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his decision which strengthens the harmony in the country” he said in Hindi.

PM Modi said that this decision was taken following the historic verdict that was passed by the Supreme Court on the disputed land case of Ayodhya saying that the land belongs to Ram Lalla or infant God Ram. Additionally, the apex court had also said that 5 acres of land must be provided to the Sunni Waqf Board for construction of a Mosque in Ayodhya.

According to the sources, not a single political party is a member of the trust created for the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Also, PM Modi said that the UP Government (Uttar Pradesh Government) has agreed to prove the Waqf Board with their share of land in Ayodhya city.

On the 9th of November, the Supreme Court had directed the government to set up a trust which will be accountable and responsible for the construction of the Mandir within 3 months.

As the announcement comes just 3 days before the Delhi Assembly Election 2020, people have raised question as to whether PM Modi’s announcement is a violation of the model code of conduct or not. However, the Election Commission (EC) said that there was no permission needed to make the announcement as, following the directives of the Supreme Court, the deadline for setting up the trust for construction of Ram Manid was 9th February 2020, that is just 1 day after the Delhi Assembly Elections and the government had to file the documents before that.
