In 2022, The Simpsons writer and former showrunner Mike Reiss travelled aboard the Titan, a submarine that brings passengers close to the Titanic debris. While in the 10th episode of the 17th season, Mike Reiss’s character predicted the Titanic submarine crash, and the internet went gaga over this discovery. The fact that he had actually travelled on the Titan is even more astounding for Simpson’s fans.
After fragments of the underwater ship were discovered on the ocean floor, the hunt for Titan, a submersible with five persons on board to view the Titanic debris, was called off. On Sunday, after having been on the water for around an hour and 45 minutes, the OceanGate Expeditions submersible ‘vanished’.
Many people observed that a 2006 episode of the venerable sitcom The Simpsons had “predicted” this catastrophe as rescuers fought to find the 22-foot Titan.

The tenth episode of Season 17 is named “Homer’s Paternity Coot”, and it features a submarine voyage that the main character Homer Simpson and his long-lost father, Mason Fairbanks, take. They come into a shipwreck containing treasure in the episode. Homer’s submarine eventually becomes stranded near a coral reef, and while he panics, the submarine displays an oxygen-low indicator. Fortunately, the tale has a happy conclusion, and it ends with the rescue of Homer and his father.
Many people compared Homer and his father Fairbanks to businesswoman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman, who were from Pakistan and were aboard the OceanGate submersible, while tweeting stills and excerpts from this episode.
The 2006 episode of The Simpsons, according to Mike Reiss, a former producer and writer for the show, was influenced by the American action thriller movie Crimson Tide, which features a nuclear submarine. Reiss interestingly revealed to the media that he and his wife also travelled on Titan to the Titanic debris in 2022. He admitted to The Sun that the submersible had communication problems while they were underwater.
