Ezra Miller and their attorney Lisa Shelkrot digitally participated in the hearing by video conferencing. They are accused of one felony count of breaking into an occupied house and one misdemeanour count of petty theft.
According to Bennington Criminal Court Operations Manager Wendy Dickie, Actor Ezra Miller of “The Flash” pleaded not guilty on Monday to burglary charges concerning an alleged Vermont house invasion where they are suspected of stealing alcohol.
On May 1, Vermont state police said they investigated a burglary complaint in Stamford and discovered that many bottles of alcohol had been stolen from a property while the owner was abroad.
After reviewing security footage and talking with witnesses, Miller was accused of theft. According to the police affidavit, the homeowner claimed to have known Miller for around 18 years. He also added that he purchased the house a year and a half ago in the same area where Miller had also bought a house.
Miller may spend as much as 26 years in jail if found guilty. The next hearing is planned on January 13.
In addition to this accusation, Miller is involved in several legal issues. According to Hawaii County Police Department, Miller was detained in March in Hilo, Hawaii, and charged with disorderly behaviour and harassment during an incident at a bar. He was let out after paying a $500 bail.
According to a court file, the actor was charged with disorderly conduct on April 19 and the harassment charge was dropped in exchange for a no-guilty plea and a $500 fine. Miller was detained for second-degree assault earlier that day after an incident at a private property in the Puna district, close to the town of Pahoa, Hawaii. No charges were filed regarding this.
The parents of the environmental activist Tokata Iron Eyes filed a protection order against Miller this year as well, alleging that the actor had inappropriate behaviour with her when she was 12 years old. Iron Eyes has denied the assertion.
Before Monday’s trial, Miller disclosed they were looking for mental health care in August. Miller claimed in a statement at the time, “Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment. I want to apologize to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behavior.”
The actor added: “I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe, and productive stage in my life.”
Miller’s lawyer Lisa Shelkrot said via email, “Ezra would like to acknowledge the love and support they have received from their family and friends, who continue to be a vital presence in their ongoing mental health.” After playing the Flash in multiple Justice League movies for Warner Bros. and DC Films, Miller will star in The Flash, which is scheduled to come out in June 2023.
