FM Nirmala Sitharaman on Forbes 100 Most Powerful Women

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has made it to Forbes’ list of the world’s 100 most powerful women for second straight year.

US Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, Biocon Founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw and CEO (Chief Executive Officer) Roshni Nadar Malhotra of HCL Enterprise were also named in the list that German Chancellor Angela Merkel has topped for the 10th year in a row.

This year, Sitharaman is ranked 41st on the list. She was ranked 34 in 2019.

These women on the 17th annual Forbes Power List cover 30 countries in the world were born across four generations.

The Forbes said “Among them are 10 heads of state, 38 CEOs and five entertainers. But where age, nationality and job description vary, they are united in the ways in which they have used their platforms to tackle the unique challenges of 2020”.

Nadar Malhotra was ranked 55th, Mazumdar-Shaw is ranked 68th, described as “India’s richest self-made woman” and Renuka Jagtiani, chairwoman of Landmark Group, is ranked 98th.

For the tenth year in a row, Angela Merkel is ranked No. 1. Merkel has retained her rank as Europe’s de facto leader, she is heading the largest economy in the region and has led Germany through the financial crisis and returning to growth. Her leadership is distinguished by her steep reserve, from standing up to Donald Trump to allowing more than a million Syrian refugees to join Germany,” Forbes said, adding: “The major question the public is now asking is who and what will come to an end after Merkel’s tenure in office.

Harris, who is the first woman to be elected vice president, the first Black American and first Asian American — “an unprecedented trifecta of firsts for California Senator Harris” is ranked third on the list.

The “rapid ascension in US politics has also catapulted” of Harris has also catapulted her for the first time to the Forbes list of the 100 Most Powerful Women in the World. For the second consecutive year, European Central Bank chief Christine Lagarde is ranked second.

The Forbes said, “These prominent women, including New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and voting rights advocate Stacey Abrams, are making history from fighting the pandemic to re-engineering American politics”.

For their efficient response to COVID-19, some of the Power Women of this year earned “global plaudits.”

By enforcing strict lockdown and quarantine procedures, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern (No. 32) defeated the first and second waves of the virus in her country.

In January, Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen (No. 37) launched a robust contact-tracing scheme, resulting in the island’s 23 million residents losing only seven lives to the virus to date, Forbes said.

This year’s list includes 17 newcomers, showing that women “lead all aspects of a society transformed by a global pandemic.”

Carol Tome (No 11), the current CEO of the American multinational corporation United Parcel Service, and Clorox Linda Rendle (No. 87), head of California, are responsible for helping provide vital services that have kept Americans connected and safe.

Karen Lynch (No 38), executive vice president and incoming CEO of CVS Health, heads the large COVID-19 research program of the pharmacy giant and will be responsible for the crucial handling of coronavirus vaccines in 2021.

Co-Founder of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Melinda Gates (No. 5), US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (No. 7), Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg (No. 22), Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina (No. 39), Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom (No. 46), renowned artists Rihanna (No. 69) and Beyonce (No. 72).
