Facebook-owned messaging service WhatsApp said to end support on some old Android and iOS devices with the year 2020. WhatsApp is ending support for Android phones and iPhones running on outdated operating systems as the calendar year draws to a close. It is said that the messaging app operated by Facebook would stop functioning on smartphones that are not running on operating systems of at least iOS 9 or Android 4.0.3.
The support page of WhatsApp suggests that users use the latest version of their operating system to experience all the features and says that iOS 9 or later is needed for WhatsApp for iPhones, while WhatsApp for Android is running on Android 4.0.3 and later. Although there are not many smartphones running on these dated operating systems at the moment, it is still important to notice which particular smartphones will lose support for the common messaging app. For iPhones, iPhone support will be lost on all iPhone models up to the iPhone 4. This means that in order to continue using WhatsApp, those who use the iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6S would need to upgrade their operating system to iOS 9 or later.

WhatsApp will stop operating on smartphones running on an Android version earlier than 4.0.3 for Android. Again, not many users are actually operating on a version of Android earlier than 4.0.3. However, Samsung Galaxy S2, the HTC Desire, the Motorola Droid Razr, and LG Optimus Black are some of the models on which WhatsApp will stop working. There may be other Android smartphones that may run on an older version of Android that could lose WhatsApp support as 2020 comes to a close.
As their operating systems may have received a patch with an update, some users might still continue to use WhatsApp on their older smartphones. For some though, the only alternative could be to get a brand-new smartphone.
To find out what operating system is running on your phone, iPhone users need to go to Settings > General > Information to find out about the version of the software on your iPhone. On the other hand, Android users should go to Settings > About Phone to see which version of Android their smartphone is running on.
WhatsApp closes support at the end of each calendar year for older iOS and Android smartphones. Support for smartphones operating on iOS 8 or older and Android phones running on version 2.3.7 or older were ended last year by WhatsApp.
