According to the Yahoo 2021 Year in Review, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the most searched personality. The Prime Minister recaptured the title of India’s Most Searched Personality, which he had held since 2017 (with a brief slip last year, when late actor Sushant Singh Rajput took the top spot).
Cricketer Virat Kohli, who had a rollercoaster year, finished at second, with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee finishing at third after a convincing win in the state assembly election.
The top newsmaker, according to Yahoo 2021 Year in Review, is ‘Farmers’ Protest,’ while Aryan Khan made his debut on the list with his NCB detention case.
Sidharth Shukla is the Most Searched Male Celebrity, as fans mourned the untimely death of a beloved TV actor, ranking him fourth, while Bitcoin is India’s most searched cryptocurrency.
Yahoo announced the 2021 Year in Review for India today, which is a collection of top personalities, newsmakers, and events of 2021 based on the users’ daily search behaviour.

This year’s list included a major new entrant, star Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan, who came in at No. 7 on the Most Searched Personality list, following his detention by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in October.
The Top Newsmaker of 2021 was the year-long ‘Indian Farmers’ Protest’ over three disputed farm laws. Aryan Khan was ranked second, with news reports about the celebrity son breaking by the minute throughout a tense October.
Raj Kundra, a businessman accused in an adult film case, was again one of the most googled newsmakers in 2021, ranking third. Other popular searches were India’s ‘Flying Sikh’ Milkha Singh, who died of COVID (No. 9), ‘Black Fungus’ (No. 5), and the Afghanistan-Taliban crisis (No.10).
PM Modi topped the list of the Most Searched Politicians in 2021, with Mamata Banerjee moving up to the second place. Rahul Gandhi fell to third place, with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is campaigning in Punjab was fourth, and BJP President Amit Shah at five.
Virat Kohli, the Indian Test and ODI skipper with the most social media followers, was the second-most sought celebrity behind Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Kohli was the most searched sports celebrity in Yahoo’s India year-end list for 2021, followed by former Indian captain MS Dhoni and star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra.
Bitcoin, Dogecoin, Shiba Inu, Ethereum, and Uniswap were made it to top five in the ‘Most Searched Cryptocurrencies’ category.
The Yahoo Year in Review team analyses users’ anonymised interest patterns based on what they looked for on Yahoo to create the analysis. It considers a variety of factors, including absolute volume and growth from previous periods, to determine which themes and patterns rise to the top.
