Daughter of Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar and Shevnati Mangeshkar, Lata Ji hailed from a musical heritage. Her father was a popular face in the Marathi music industry and a theatre artist. He was the first to tutor Lata Mangeshkar who then enacted as a child artist in many of his plays. Lata Ji started singing at the young age of 13 and recorded her first Hindi song “Mata Ek Sapoot Ki Duniya Badal De Tu” for the Marathi feature Gajaabhau.

Lata Mangeshkar collaborated with the who’s who of the music industry viz. Anil Biswas, Naushad Ali, SD Burman and Shankar Jaikishan among others. She has been bestowed with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan alongside numerous National and Filmfare awards.

Lata Ji was admitted into Candy Beach Hospital in Mumbai after testing positive for Covid-19. As the news broke out, countless personalities from the Indian film fraternity, Politics and Sports extended their condolences to the iconic singer and her remarkable contributions to the singing industry. The police forces and army join hands to bid farewell to her.

Alia Bhatt took to Instagram and shares a picture of the late singer captioned “immortal”. Cricket stalwart, Sachin Tendulkar pays his last respects to the melodious queen of music whose voice shall continue to rule the hearts of people for time immemorial. Bollywood legend, Amitabh Bachchan while expressing remorse on the unfortunate occasion, says “Voice of a million centuries left us”.

The cremation of Lata Ji will take place with full state honours in Mumbai’s Hivaji Park. PM Modi to arrive for the funeral at 6 pm.  The last song recorded by Lata Mangeshkar was the Gayatri Mantra for the wedding of Isha Ambani and Anand Piramal.
