The crime that shook the nation took a stunning twist in the early hours of Friday, all four men who were accused in the Gang-Rape and Murder of 26 year old Veterinarian Doctor Priyanka Reddy were shot dead today by the police. The police said that the accused were trying to escape during the investigations at the spot where the burned body of the woman was found.
The four men, Mohammed Arif, 26, Chintakunta Chennakeshavulu, 20, Jollu Naveen, 20, and Jollu Shiva, 20, who were arrested last week were taken to the site of the heinous crime at around 3 am for a reconstruction of the crime, said the police. The four accused along with the police were at the spot near a bridge where the charred and burned body of the deceased woman was found, almost 50 kilometres from Hyderabad, when, as the police is claiming, one of the accused signalled the others for making a run to escape. The police claims that the encountered happened in self defence as two of the four accused attacked them, grab hold of their weapons and fired.
According to Prakash Reddy, Deputy Commissioned of Police (DCP), Hyderabad ‘They were killed in crossfire. They tried to snatch weapons from the guards but were shot dead’ and added that the men had died before medical assistance could have been provided.
People in huge number gathered on the bridge, looking at the spot, people gave ‘Thumbs-up’ sign to police personnel and some even showered flowers.
The four accused of raping and then burning the woman were taken in custody one day after the crime.
According to the police, on the 27th of November, all 4 men who are truck drivers and cleaners, saw the 26 year old Vet doctor (Disha: the name police gave to the woman) park her scooter near a toll-booth of a busy highway, soon after she left for her dermatology appointment, the men deflated the tyre and waited for her to return. As the woman returned, the 4 men took her to a truck yard promising her to fix her scooter where they gang raped her, strangled her, and then burnt her body so that no evidence is found against them.
As the entire nation raged on the horrific incident, Telangana Law Department approved a fast track court trial for this case.
The father of the deceased woman told a leading news agency ‘It has been 10 days to the day my daughter died. I express my gratitude towards the police and the government for this. My daughter’s soul must be at peace now’.
There were celebrities and politicians who praised the police, though there were people who raised voice against the encounter as well.
Swaranjit Sen, Ex-DGP (Director General of Police), Andhra Pradesh said ‘Although it’s totally unprofessional, but I think this was what was expected. I knew something like this was going to happen’. He suggested, that public outrage had left with little to no choice with the police.
Lawyer Vrinda Grover used Facebook to denounce the Encounter saying ‘SAY NO TO TRIGGER TRACK INJUSTICE! This is absolutely unacceptable’.
In the parliament, several MPs (Member of Parliament) had asked for a speedy trial and capital punishment for the accused, Jaya Bachchan even said that people accused (once found guilty) in the rape cases should be handed over to the public and let be lynched.
People on Tweeter are praising the police for the step they had to take.
