The Modi Government, on Tuesday, announced the “Mission Mode” initiative which centres around the recruitment of 10 lakh (1 million) people in various Central government departments and ministries in the next 18 months. Interestingly, the deadline ends merely 4-5 months prior to re-elections.

According to the National Statistical Office’s Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), the unemployment rate in urban India for people aged 15 and above fell to 8.7% in October-December 2021 from 10.3% the previous quarter.
Throughout October-December of 2020, unemployment was at an all-time high, owing to the devastating effects of the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions enforced in the country to prevent the spread of the fatal coronavirus. BJP MP Varun Gandhi, in a tweet thanking PM Modi, stated that in addition to creating new employment, the government will have to make significant efforts to fill more than 10 million “sanctioned but unfilled” positions.

PM Modi had turned his attention toward the rapid filling up of vacancies in the first week of April and had mentioned that the process will kick off within months. Subsequently, every department and ministry had put together a list of vacancies against the sanctioned posts.

Following a 4-hour long meeting with all the Central government secretaries in April, Modi highlighted the recruitment drive. Modi’s order to accelerate the filling up of vacancies becomes prominent considering the opposition trying to turn in unemployment and vacancies in general, particularly in the recently held UP assembly elections.
Responding to a query in Rajya Sabha in July last year, Jitendra Singh (Minister of State for Personnel) mentioned that there were approximately 8.72 lakh vacant posts in several central government departments as of March 1st, 2020. Out of the 40.05 lakh sanctioned posts, 31.32 lakh were occupied leaving behind, 8.73 lakh sanctioned but not filled positions.
Congress and other opposition parties have been criticising the government over rising prices and unemployment. They’ve also called attention to a large number of job openings in various government agencies.
According to Congressman Sachin Pilot, “Under the directionless and failed governance of the Central government, inflation and unemployment are breaking new records every day. In April, wholesale inflation in the country hit 15.08 per cent, the highest amount in the country’s history “Four years.”
Meanwhile, after two years of deliberation among three service chiefs, the Ministry of Defence is expected to adopt the ambitious Tour of Duty scheme this week. The strategy was proposed in order to increase job opportunities, with the eventual goal of guaranteeing that 40% of workers be recruited through this method.
