The meeting of the Union Home Minister Amit Shah with the protesting farmers which took place on the evening of Tuesday – a signal coming after the involvement of the government’s highest level to resolve the issue over the contentious farm laws – failed.
Both the sides – the Central Government and the Farmers – stood firm on their stand. The farmers have refused to accept the amendment in the laws proposed by the government and are demanding them to completely rescind the laws.
Another big meeting which was scheduled for today with the Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar – the sixth since the start of these protests – has been called off.

As per reports, the farmers’ unions were presented with a presentation of the bills in the meeting held on Tuesday evening and today a proposal was sent with written amendments which the government is willing to carry out.
Hannan Mollah, General Secretary of All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) said, “No meeting will be held between farmers and the government tomorrow (Wednesday). The minister has said a proposal will be given to farmer leaders tomorrow (Wednesday). Farmer leaders will hold a meeting to discuss the proposal,” while addressing the reporters after the meeting on Tuesday evening.
A farmers’ meeting will take place today post noon at the Singhu border – where thousands of farmers have been protesting and camping since more than 10 days – demanding the withdrawal of the three new Farm Laws which they fear will decrease their income and leave them at the helm of the businessmen in the country.
Rakesh Tikait, spokesperson for the Bhartiya Kisan Union, on Wednesday, said, “We’ll hold a meeting over the draft that will be sent by the centre. That meeting (talks with the government) is cancelled. The draft will be discussed and the further course of action will be decided. We hope things will be clear by 4 or 5 pm today”.
The offer of amendments in the 3 laws was made at the last few meetings between the farmers and centre which was turned down by the former. There are expectations that the government may make a fresh proposal.
However, the government had announced that there has been no rethink on its last stated position.
The invitation from the Union Home Minister came earlier on Tuesday amidst the nationwide shutdown (Bharat Bandh) called by the farmers. The protests, which have received support from most opposition parties, trade and transport unions and also a wide section of organisations, had hit road and rail traffic in parts of the country and forced shut down of many markets.
