Highlights:
- Almost 77,000 security personnel tested positive for novel Coronavirus in India till 21st August
- 401 of them lost their lives to the deadly virus
- Over 15,000 of these personnel came from paramilitary forces
According to a report from the Bureau of Police Research and Development, as many as 76,768 security personnel from all over India, including Paramilitary forces like CISF, CRPF, BSF, and NSG, have tested positive for the novel Coronavirus. In addition, 401 of them have lost their lives to the deadly virus.
As per the report, complied till 21st August 2020, titled “Indian Police Response to COVID-19 Crisis” Maharashtra topped the chart with 129 security personnel deaths due to COVID-19 and 12,760 positive cases among the police personnel.
Telangana was in the 2nd place with 40 deaths due to the deadly virus.
Out of the over 76,500 positive cases, paramilitary forces accounted for 15,318 infections with Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) leading the table with 5,467 cases and 24 deaths in the category.
Telangana Police used digital tools to combat the spread of the novel Coronavirus and maintain public order and safety, the police department said that the city police extensively used multimedia platforms to restrict the spread of misinformation, fake news and rumours, as per the report which was released last week said.

A camera-based detection of mask violations was also used at various locations in the city. These systems provided the heat map of violations to understand and assess the areas where maximum non-compliances took place and initiate corrective measures were needed.
In addition, the city police also used crowd analytics with the CCTV footage in order to identify the public gatherings beyond permissible limits besides using the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system to check vehicles in violation. The police also generated challans and made seizure of the automobiles if required, the report said.
The report mentioned, “Under a pioneering initiative of Rachakonda police in partnership with Tata Institute of social sciences, nearly 10,669 workers were interviewed personally and the requirements were assessed. Wherever interventions were required, they were provided with dry ration kits, medicines, health check ups specially to sick and pregnant women, water supply, rental issues with owners etc,”.
The report, lauding the effort put in the by the police department of Andhra Pradesh, said that the technological advances which were brought by the police during the last few months had served them appropriately during the pandemic.
The launch of the Disha Application, women police stations, setting up labs along with several other technical units placed the state police on a firm footing to handle the pandemic has helped the state’s police stand out on the national level.
