On Friday, history-sheeter Vikas Dubey was shot dead in an encounter after a road accident which toppled the vehicle carrying him to Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh from Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh the place from where he was arrested on Thursday says the police.
Vikas Dubey allegedly snatched a gun from a policeman and then tried to escape but was surrounded, claimed the police, asserting that they tried to get him to surrender.
The police vehicle carrying Vikas Dubey was just 1 hour short from Kanpur overturned on the rain-slicked highway and seeing an opening he tried to make the most of it, said the police. The convoy was of 3 cars and he was shot dead similar to many of his aides said the police.
Kanpur Police said, “The car overturned and policemen and the accused were injured. Then Vikas Dubey grabbed a gun from an injured policeman and ran. The police team caught up and surrounded him and tried to get him to surrender, but he refused and started firing. The police had to fire back in self-defence,” in a statement.
The statement also said, Vikas Dubey was injured and taken to hospital. He died during treatment,”
Last Friday Vikas Dubey along with his accomplices organised a massacre of policemen in his village who had gone there to arrest him after a complaint and he was on the run since then, however, was arrested yesterday from the famous Mahakal Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.
He was spotted by the temple administration and when he brought the Prasad and enter the temple he was confronted by the guards. Soon the police took him into custody where he was seen yelling, “Main Vikas Dubey hoon, Kanpur wala! (I am Vikas Dubey, from Kanpur),” while he was being held by several Madhya Pradesh policemen.
The manner of his arrest, at a very public place and far from UP, led to speculation that he had decided to turn himself in at a time and place of his choosing.
Evading the UP policemen on his trail for five days, Dubey had driven from Kanpur to Faridabad in Haryana, where he was seen on a CCTV of a hotel just before the police arrived. He then drove to Kota in Rajasthan and finally to Madhya Pradesh in a 1,500-km journey.
A senior UP police officer Mohit Agarwal said: “We had caught many of his associates and a few were killed. So definitely he was trying to save his life and on the run.”
A petition was filed in the Supreme Court of India last night had asked for security for the gangster and a CBI investigation into a series of encounter killings.
Hours before Dubey’s arrest, two more of his accomplices were shot dead by the Uttar Pradesh police department in separate encounters.
One of them, Prabhat, who was arrested on Wednesday from the Faridabad hotel where Dubey was sighted was on the way to Uttar Pradesh, he allegedly snatched a pistol from a policeman trying to fix a flat tyre and tried to run away when he was shot, the police said.
Dubey’s closest aide Aman Dubey was shot dead after he was chased down by the police to a village on Wednesday.
Dubey, in his 50s, had more than 60 criminal cases against him which including murder, kidnapping, rioting and extortion. His alleged links with the police and politicians helped him stay out of jail for years.
Former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav suggested in a tweet that his killing helped the UP government protect secrets that would have come out on the politician-criminal nexus.
Today again, Akhilesh Yadav attacked the Uttar Pradesh Government through a tweet saying “दरअसल ये कार नहीं पलटी है, राज़ खुलने से सरकार पलटने से बचाई गयी है.” Which loosely translates to “Actually, it is not the car that has topple rather it is the UP Government that has saved itself from falling”.

On last Friday, a large team of police personnel who went to Dubey’s Bikru village to arrest him in an attempted murder case was caught by surprise when they were surrounded with open fire from rooftops.
Eight policemen were killed in the ambush which was set up after the gangster was tipped off by a local police inspector.
Dubey and his men escaped after the massacre unscathed. The UP administration tore down Dubey’s house and launched a massive hunt for him. Two policemen were arrested for allegedly helping him and over 60 local cops shunted out.
Dubey’s wife and son surrendered themselves in Lucknow and were taken for questioning last evening.
