Unlike Twitter, Mastodon is designed to operate in a decentralized fashion, thus users have the option of joining an already-established community or creating their own.

Mastodon is available to users via the Play Store and Apple Store alike, and you can get started by choosing a server and accepting the regulations of the platform.

On Mastodon, every user-managed server includes a description of the community it serves, which may be organized according to nation, locality, or interest.

Users were quick to compare Mastadon with Twitter as the latter’s users are able to "tweet" their posts, whereas, on the former users may "toot" their opinions.

On Mastodon, the character limit per post is about 5,000, which is much more than Twitter's restriction of 280 characters.
