On Sunday, a clash between the people who were protesting against and for the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) consumed the whole city, so much so that on Monday 5 metro stations – Jaffrabad, Maujpur-Babarpur, Gokulpuri, Johri Enclave and Shiv Vihar – were closed down which are still closed. On Monday noon, Delhi Police officer, Ratan Lal was killed in the NorthEast Delhi during the protests that turned violent.

The police sources, today, said that the policeman was killed of gunshot wounds. The 42 year old police officer was killed by the protestors near Dayalpur Police Station at around 12:00 pm on Monday when the violence was at its peak.

Earlier it was assumed that Ratan Lal has been killed in the stone-pelting but according to the autopsy report from the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in Dilshad Gardens, Delhi, it was found that a bullet entered through his left shoulder was the reason behind his death. The bullet was recovered from the right shoulder of the martyred police officer when the autopsy was underway.

Ratan Lal’s body will be taken to his Delhi residence in Burari and then will be transported to his home village – Fathepur Tihwali, Sikar District, Rajasthan – where the cremation ceremony will take place on the 26th February.

However, the residents of his village are demanding for a government job for a family member and pension for his elderly parents and have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They said that the cremation ceremony will not take place until they receive an assurance for the same.

On Monday, as the fight between the two groups protesting against and for CAA developed further, many shops were burned down to ashes, not just this, many vehicles including that of high officials of the Police force were torched by the goons. At least 7 people have died and over 100 people have been injured in this.

As mentioned by a leading news agency in their article, the government sources said that the violence was “orchestrated” for publicity given the time it has come when the President of the United States of America has come to Delhi.

Ratan Lal joined the Delhi police in 1998 and is survived by his wife, Poonam, and 3 children – Siddhi (13), Kanak (10), and Ram (8).

People who were acquaintances of Ratan Lal said that Lal was a peace-loving person and would avoid getting into an argument or a fight.

Assistant Sub Inspector, Hiralal, who knew Ratan Lal from working with him for around 3 years said, “His behaviour and language were never like that of a policeman”.

Ratan Lal’ younger brother, Dinesh Lal said, “He was a reader of the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) of Gokulpuri. He had just accompanied the ACP, but the mob surrounded him and killed him”.

Today, the violence returned in NorthEast Delhi. The 5 metro stations mentioned above are still shut down and the metros are being terminated at Welcome Metro Station. In a statement, the Delhi Police said, “The situation is very tense. We are continuously receiving calls related to incidents of violence from northeast Delhi”.

In Maujpur, stone-pelting has was reported, and a group of people who were travelling by e-rickshaw were not only thrashed but looted of all their valuables. Additionally, in Kardampuri area, apart from stone-pelting, locals reported bullets being fired by a person who is yet to be identified. Both, Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Union Home Minister, Amit Shah urged the people to maintain peace.
